Labiaplasty Surgery
What is labiaplasty?
Labiaplasty is a minor surgical procedure to reduce the size of the inner labial lips surrounding the vaginal opening. For various reasons, the inner labia can grow large and protrude from the vagina. This often leads to discomfort during intercourse, wearing certain types of clothing, or even just sitting. Excess labial tissue can also contribute to difficulty maintaining good hygiene and can affect a woman’s self-confidence.
Labiaplasty is the most effective way in correcting issues associated with excess labial tissue and is rising in popularity as more women discuss these concerns with medical professionals. The surgery should be performed by an expert in genital surgical techniques. As a Board-Certified Urologist specializing in reconstructive surgery, Dr. Leocadio is well trained in performing these procedures in a safe and efficient manner to bring about the excellent functional and cosmetic results you are looking for.
Surgical Concerns:
Like any patient anticipating surgery, you will have a complete evaluation and physical examination with Dr. Leocadio. This will also include pre-operative photography for documentation purposes. The plan for your individualized surgery will be discussed in detail, and any questions answered. Labiaplasty is intended to increase comfort and quality of life and does not negatively impact intercourse or orgasm.
The surgery will be performed with sedation. While labiaplasty can be performed with local anesthetic, Dr. Leocadio prefers sedation so the tissues do not become distorted with the use of excess local anesthetic injections, therefore resulting in better surgical outcomes. The outpatient surgery will take approximately 30 minutes and will take place in our ambulatory surgical center, allowing the patient to go home the same day and avoid the hospital. The surgical area will be injected with local anesthetic for comfort at the conclusion of the procedure which will be done using dissolvable sutures. Complete post-operative care instructions will be provided.
Recovery:
Some swelling and discomfort are expected for approximately two weeks. Once the healing process concludes, only very faint scars on the inner labia remain and are very difficult to see. Pelvic elevation while sitting, for example on a “doughnut” pillow is advised for comfort. Additionally, ice packs and oral medications for comfort are recommended. You should avoid intercourse or tampons for 4 weeks. You are encouraged to walk and shower without limitations the day following surgery, and you should be able to return to work after 2 to 3 days.
